The bucket kit comes with the necessary hardware to convert a bucket into a drip irrigation system.  Each kit includes two irrigation tubes 15 meters in length.  The two tubes should be spaced one meter apart.  The optimum bucket size of twenty liters (five gallons) develops adequate drip line pressure. By filling a twenty liter bucket twice daily, it provides sufficient water for vegetables under most growing conditions (approximately 30-40 liters).  Water use is reduced by over fifty percent through strategic placement of the water near the root of the plant, when compared to standard surface watering techniques.  To reduce evaporation, mulch may be applied directly over the drip tubes.

The bucket should be mounted on a stand so that the bottom of the bucket is at least one meter above the soil to provide drip line pressure.  Results are best in situations with level ground.  If ground is sloped, place bucket stand at the end that is at the higher elevation.

It is wise to first water the seed bed using the drip line, and then plant the seed or transplant one plant in each little circle of wet soil.

If water being used is dirty or contains debris, the water can be pre-filtered by pouring it through a cloth tied over the top of the bucket.  It is also a good idea to place a cover over the bucket.

Bucket kits can last five to seven years if cared for properly.  At the end of the growing season, flush the drip tubes.  Then carefully roll up the drip tubes; do not fold.

Bucket Drip Irrigation Drip bucket kits can be purchased through the SOWER Project.  The sale of drip bucket kits provides financial support for the world-wide stewardship outreach projects of the First Baptist Church, Lindsborg, Kansas.  Kit prices are based on quantities purchased.
